Q: How should rice be stored?

A: Cooked rice: if you are not going to eat your rice immediately after cooking, it should be cooled as quickly as possible and stored in a shallow container, covered and placed in the refrigerator. Cooked rice can be stored in this manner for up to 3 days. Uncooked rice: Tastic Parboiled Rice, and milled white rice, has a shelf life of one year. Once opened, rice should be kept in an airtight container that keeps out dust, mites and other contaminants. Uncooked brown rice: this can only be stored for up to 6 months because of the oil in the bran layer. Refrigerate if you plan to store it for a longer period of time.

Q: How do you reheat rice successfully?

A: When rice is reheated properly, it tastes as good as it did when it was first prepared. For each cup of cooked rice, simply add two tablespoons of water. Cover and heat in the oven or on the stovetop for about 5 minutes, or until it is heated through. If you are using a microwave oven, add water, cover and cook for about one minute per cup of rice. Frozen rice may be cooked on high for two minutes per cup. Fluff your rice with a fork when it is hot.

Q: Does Tastic process Thai Rice?

A: Yes.

Q: What happened to Tastic Old Mill Stream Rice?

A: Tastic Old Mill Stream has been re-launched as Tastic Nature's Brown Rice and is available in 1 kg and 2 kg bags.

Q: Tips for perfect rice?

A: Be careful to measure the amount of rice and liquid correctly. Keep the lid on tightly when cooking to prevent steam from escaping. If the rice is not quite tender or the liquid is not fully absorbed, cook for an extra few minutes. If cooked rice is crunchy, add a little more liquid and cook until the grains are tender. If more separate grains are desirable, sauté rice in a small amount of butter before cooking, then add the correct amount of liquid and cook as normal.

Q: Is rice good for diabetics?

A: Rice is an excellent food for diabetics to enjoy, as long as you serve it in moderation. The body uses less insulin to process the starch found in Tastic Parboiled Rice, which has a low glycemic index value. The glycemic load (GL) per serving is 20. Nature's Brown Rice is an even better option for diabetics as it is endorsed by the Heart & Stroke Foundation of SA, it is low in salt and fats, and high in fibre.

Q: What is parboiled rice?

A: This is rice that has been soaked in warm water under pressure, then steamed and dried before being milled. This process gelatinises the starch in the grain and forces nutrients back into the endosperm or the heart of the rice grain, allowing retention of the natural vitamin and mineral content. The process also eliminates surface starch common to regular white milled rice and therefore makes the grains more separate after cooking.

Q: What is the shelf life of Tastic Rice?

A: One year.

Q: Which rice is best recommended for curry dishes?
